JPG and JPEG are the same file formats. No distinction between a .jpg photo and a .jpeg photo — both formats apply the identical JPEG compression standard and save photos in the same way.
The difference is purely in the file extension, being a legacy issue from the early days of computing. JPEG was developed in 1992 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. When Microsoft released early versions of Windows, the OS imposed a limitation: extensions were limited to be 3 characters.
